Ice melted from the coast, and the sea was alive again, salt on the wind. Spring passed. The muddy roads dried, and the air smelled of blossoms and cut grass.

His mother died one night in May. He placed her hands on her chest, over her Bible, and poured lamp oil onto the floor. He rolled the logs from the hearth, walked out with only the fiddle, and stood on the hill. He played his father’s song.

The stars unfurled, suddenly faint as the fire lifted, darkening the road. Flames like orange curtains billowed up from the windows.

A small crowd gathered. They came from nearby farms and the village.

“What have you done?” a man asked.

Joseph lowered the fiddle. “She died.”

“So you did this?”

He didn’t respond. The sea’s dark was immense, expanding around the light.

“He’s crazy,” someone said. “He never liked her.”

Joseph turned away and started walking, knowing that if he found the man who’d said that—if he looked at him now, he would kill him, and maybe others.

“We’ll have you arrested,” someone called, but Joseph didn’t stop.
